What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard developed by Anthropic that allows AI assistants like Claude to securely connect to external data sources. Instead of manually querying APIs or writing reports, you can ask questions in natural language:
User: "What are our total emissions for 2024?"

Claude: "Your total emissions for 2024 are 1,234 tCO2e:
- Scope 1: 234 tCO2e (19%)
- Scope 2: 456 tCO2e (37%)
- Scope 3: 544 tCO2e (44%)

Compared to 2023, this represents a 12% reduction."

Why Use MCP for Sustainability?

Natural Language Queries

Ask questions about your emissions in plain English. No SQL or API knowledge required.

Instant Analysis

Get immediate insights without building dashboards or waiting for reports.

Contextual Understanding

Claude understands GHG Protocol, scopes, and sustainability terminology.

Conversational Exploration

Follow up naturally: “What about just Scope 3?” or “Break that down by facility.”

The Dcycle MCP Server connects Claude to your sustainability data:
  1. You ask Claude a question about emissions, facilities, or fleet
  2. Claude calls the MCP Server with the appropriate tool
  3. The MCP Server queries Dcycle’s API using your credentials
  4. Claude interprets the results and responds in natural language

Capabilities

Query Emissions Data

Ask about your carbon footprint across any dimension:
  • “What are our Scope 3 emissions by category?”
  • “Compare Q1 2024 vs Q1 2023 emissions”
  • “Which emission source grew the most this year?”

Explore Your Organization

Navigate your organizational structure and data:
  • “List all subsidiaries under our holding company”
  • “Show me the organization hierarchy”
  • “Which business unit has the highest emissions intensity?”

Analyze Facilities & Fleet

Drill down into specific assets:
  • “What’s the energy consumption of our Madrid warehouse?”
  • “List our top 10 vehicles by fuel consumption”
  • “Which facilities are missing data for 2024?”

Monitor Data Quality

Stay on top of data completeness:
  • “Are there any failed processing jobs?”
  • “What’s our data coverage for this quarter?”
  • “Which facilities haven’t uploaded invoices this month?”

Use Cases

  • Quick answers during management meetings
  • Ad-hoc analysis without building reports
  • Identify emission hotspots across the organization
  • Track progress against reduction targets
  • Instant access to client emission summaries
  • Troubleshoot data processing issues
  • Answer client questions in real-time
  • Live demonstrations with real data
  • Quick organization overviews
  • Showcase platform capabilities interactively

Security

Local Execution

The MCP server runs on your machine. No data passes through third parties.

Your Credentials

Uses your Dcycle API key with the same permissions you have in the app.

Organization Isolation

Only access data you’re authorized to see.

Read-Only

Current tools only read data - no modifications to your account.
